Rural Fire Driving (RFD) is an internal RFS, specialist program for members who drive RFS vehicles under operational conditions. It is aligned with a national unit of competency. It is designed to take a member with an appropriate driver’s licence, Bush Firefighter (BF) or Bush Fire Support (BFS) certification, and give them operational driving competency.
Before commencing training or assessment in RFD, a member must:
Note: Most members seeking RFD certification do so in order to drive and operate firefighting appliances on the fireground. In such cases they should be encouraged (but are not required) to complete the AFT component of the Advanced Firefighter (AF) program, or equivalent. This is because the subjects covered in AFT, (namely equipment maintenance, operation of pumps and navigation) provide skills that are also often relevant to operating firefighting appliances on the fireground.
The Monaro Team includes many of the AFT subjects that relate to pump operations in the BF course (this is a local arrangement)
The following unit of competency is aligned with this program:
| National Code | Title of Unit of Competency |
| PUAVEH001B | Drive vehicles under operational conditions |
There are no national pre-requisites or co-requisites specified for the unit of competency PUAVEH001B Drive vehicles under operational conditions.
Pre-requisites for the RFD course are a BF qualification plus some previous pump operations training (example: a Monaro Team pumps and pumping workshop)
We had two successful nominees, they will receive joining instructions directly from our Regional L&D Officer.
Yanco Agricultural College is an excellent training facility that offers training rooms, plenty of space and accommodation.
