Village Firefighter (VF) is an internal RFS mainstream program for members to carry out small structural, vehicle and similar ”village” firefighting activities under direct supervision. It is designed to enable suitable members to work within a supervised team of firefighters using relevant equipment and communications to control village type fires safely and effectively.
Before commencing training or assessment in VF, a member must:
The following unit of competency is aligned with this program:
| National Code | Title of Unit of Competency | Comments |
| PUAFIR202B | Respond to Isolated/Remote Structure Fire | Covered by the VF program |
The following units are also aligned with the VF program, but (apart from some VF specific aspects) are usually covered in a prior or integrated BF program.
| National Code | Title of Unit of Competency |
| PUAFIR201B | Prevent Injury (Fire Specific) |
| PUATEA001B | Work in a Team |
Both of the competencies (above) are covered in the BF program or a combined BF/VF program.
Note: The RFS VF program also covers some types of situations not referred to specifically in PUAFIR202A Respond to Isolated/Remote Structure Fire (e.g. vehicle fires)
The pre-requisite for PUAFIR202B Respond to Isolated/Remote Structure Fire is PUAFIR201B Prevent Injury. The co-requisite for PUAFIR202B Respond to Isolated/Remote Structure Fire is PUATEA001B Work in a Team. These prerequisite and co-requisite requirements are taken into account in the structure of the VF or BF/VF program.

Cooma Fire Control Centre and Emergency Operations Centre serves as a base for the Monaro Team RFS operations with other Fire Control Centres in Bombala and Berridale. The facility is set up for use as an operations centre for a wide range of emergency management tasks not limited to firefighting.
The training room is used by many community groups and emergency service organisations. Access to the training room can be made through the Monaro RFS reception or via a side entry and hallway that leads directly into the training room.
Cooma SES occupies the engine bay and offices on the northern end of the complex and the Cooma Brigade uses the engine bays that are adjacent to the Fire Control Centre to the south.
